Serving The Community Through Food
The Speculative ReMemory project was led by artist and programme facilitator, Sandra Falase, as part of a year-long engagement programme in 2024 at Alice Billing House, supported by the Creative Land Trust and Heritage Lottery Fund.
Sylvie Belbouab is a photographer, social documentary maker and community artist who has lived in Newham for 20 years.
In early December 2024, Sylvie visited the Renewal Programme initiative in Eastham to engage with the volunteers and staff at the Renewal Programme initiative to hear more about their stories and capture their portrait as they worked.
The Renewal Programme is a local charity based in Newham with a community mission helmed by its volunteers who help with the distribution of groceries at the foodbank, as well as offering a free warm meal service and advice on lowering energy bills in a cost of living crisis to local residents. Other programmed activities include a chess club and community garden facilitated by volunteers. We had the pleasure of speaking with some of these volunteers to hear more about their experiences working with the programme, with Sylvie documenting the two days with her camera.
About the project, Sylvie Said:
“It’s great to shed light on on all the wonderful work that the people at the Renewal programmes do”.
