MONIKA SZOLLE: ALICE BILLING HOUSE’S PHOTOGRAPHER IN RESIDENCE
Monika Szolle has been Alice Billing House’s photographer-in-residence for 2024.
Monika is a Newham resident, Alice Billing House studio resident and professional photographer who specialises in modern portraiture where working with muses allows them to feel comfortable and empowered resulting in artistic imagery that makes a statement.
Monika took part in Alice Billings Connects, the arts programme preceding the opening of Alice Billing House, aiming to reinvigorate interest in the building and its potential. It seemed a natural progression for Monika to become Alice Billing House’s first photography-in-residence as she has an understanding of the aims of the space by being involved in previous projects, and having a studio on site meant attendance to events were easy and convenient.
Monika was commissioned to attend events/activities at the building and outreach to capture imagery to show progress, engagement and shine a light on the space to raise awareness.
Monika said about residency;
“The residency at Alice Billing House has been an invaluable experience. I've thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with fellow artists and documenting the vibrant creative community here. Working on the Supper Cloth series has been particularly inspiring, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to showcase my work during open days and on social media. This residency has solidified my passion for portrait and documentary photography and has given me the confidence to pursue new creative avenues.
Documenting the first year of Alice Billing House has been a privilege. It's been inspiring to witness the space transform into a thriving hub for creativity and community. Through my photography, I've aimed to capture the energy, diversity, and unique spirit of the artists and projects that have called this place home. This experience has not only allowed me to grow as a photographer but has also deepened my appreciation for the role of art in fostering connection and inspiration.
Having a dedicated studio at Alice Billing House has been a game-changer for my practice. The natural light and private space have allowed me to experiment with new techniques and create more intimate portraits. I've also found that having a designated workspace has improved my focus and productivity.
The residency has provided me with a supportive environment where I can nurture my creativity and connect with like-minded individuals.”
