This free workshop celebrated Black History month in Newham and explored themes of memory, displacement, trauma, belonging and home.  It was hosted by Fungai Marima, Rebecca George and Xuan Sinden.

Through this workshop, 17 participants explored themes of memory, touching on displacement, trauma, belonging and home.

Attendees brought with them photos, books, writing and drawings They collaged, drew, painted and wrote their own memories which we then scanned and acetoned onto Fabriano paper that we used to take a 3D body mould capturing our bodies as an archive.

Testimonials

— Theo

Memory is the journey of life and death and the time we have in between.

Dedicated my collage to a family member who recently passed away. I wanted to Reconnect with the impressions she left in her heart and make that on a page. I enjoyed the social element of this workshop, the food and learning something new.

— Rumbi

I’m a writer and wanted to explore outside of words. I wanted to be immersed in creating physically. My works are based on poems, archiving work outside the body, releasing memory from the body.

— Kwaku

The discription of nostalgia resonated with me and worked up emotions thinking about the past. Exploring and reflecting on younger years. It brought back the carefree youthful mindset and brought it to this day. I’m also a writer and a happy creative beyond words.
