MAKE AN ARTIST APRON OUT OF A SHIRT
In Newham, and elsewhere, when an apprentice started his apprenticeship making an apron would be one of the first things they would do. Clothes were expensive, uniforms for jobs were rare- so protecting your clothes was very important. An apprentice paid for the privilege, but your master would not usually pay for any clothing you needed.
On 16 June studio holder Laura Holland led a workshop where participants brought a favourite but unloved shirt and transformed it into a useful across-back artist apron, much like an apprentice apron. This was part of our programme for Newham Heritage Month.
Laura is an experienced designer-maker, having made costumes for the stage and screens for over 30 years. She now runs a women’s clothing brand for the over 50s which is ethically and sustainably produced. She also runs several community sewing classes, sharing her skills and expertise to the people of Newham. Empowering them to make and mend!
